• It is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), sawdust (salt is needed to produce green silicon carbide) and so on through high temperature smelting in electric resistance furnace.
• Also known as carborundum, it is a semiconductor containing silicon and carbon.
• Silicon carbide (SiC)  use as silicon carbide polishing has two basic varieties, black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide.
